The Game's Rolling Dodge Warrants Praise

For those who have experienced the popular action RPG, or nearly any 3D action game, chances are you're acquainted with the wonderful feature known as the “dodge roll.” This evasion technique allows your character to carry out a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to dodge all incoming damage and move away from foes. Appears practical, wouldn't you say?

The evasion roll, nevertheless, has received a lot of flak, not simply as a result of the somersault; some have dubbed it dumb, a easy way out, and an implausible action — and sometimes, I see the point. You should see me somersaulting past nearby enemy groups in a well-known fantasy game — untouchable! But Elden Ring's dodge roll represents the evasion to surpass every other dodge rolls, and I'll tell you why.

In Elden Ring's case, the designers identified a clever approach to respond to all views claiming the maneuver is not challenging enough: simply give each opponent excessive power, triple that, and every Tarnished who ventures close them will appreciate deeply because of their evasion move, myself included. With so much on the line, evading successfully comes across as a triumph, not a cheat.

No different defensive move in the game comes close to this level of gratification and dependability, because swift moves offer limited distance and blocking attempts get quickly shattered by strong enemies. A person once suggested jumping as a go-to game avoidance strategy, but besides failing to offer perfect repositioning, I didn't see how taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of defeating bosses (skill issue, perhaps).

Mastering the Technique

But even though the dodge roll provides relief in a famously difficult title, it isn't without skill. First of all, the game's dodge roll only triggers a frame of protection once you let go of the evasion key, which stops a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dire situations. Furthermore, although it may move you aside from enemies, it's significantly more useful to employ it as a chance to get closer, preferably behind the opponent, and land some hits. And, finally, it remains necessary to understand and anticipate foe assaults, because rolling prematurely of a prolonged preparation might terminate your protection before the blow lands… which will seriously hurt.

A Harmonious System

Even though rolling-dodging in quick succession may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in the game. Of course, that still doesn't make it a realistic combat move — which is precisely why it would be pure horror to see it in a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — however, this is a dazzling imaginative experience under discussion, thus why worry?

Comparable to any well-executed dodge roll, the game's evasion sequence is improved by a brief tumbling leap at the beginning, offering a lively impression instead of plopping the player on the floor. According to your loadout, the move can feel extremely nimble or somewhat sluggish, however, it's consistently quicker and smoother than the dodge rolls found in Dark Souls. Admittedly, you will stick your large weapon into the ground while equipped with it, but that's on you for not just playing ranged weapons (In jest — steer clear of the game with a crossbow).

Optimal Harmony

Elden Ring's dodging mechanic creates the perfect balance between difficulty and chance, providing prospects of success while risking the loss of that hope at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll be rewarded with more than triumph, but satisfaction.
