Exactly 30 years after the first Toy Story film was released, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge attached to her outfit.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
