The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
