A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Platform data shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

The industry faced scrutiny under the previous administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
